Tough day as Deakin Handball lose both matches

It was a tough day at the office for Deakin Handball on Sunday with both the Men’s Team and the Women’s Team going down to Melbourne Handball Club.

Men’s Team match

In the early match, our Men’s Team began brightly and took the game up to the Melbourne boys. However, with no substitutes and a lack of experience in the team, the opposition began to get on top late in the first half.

With more experience and fresh legs, the Melbourne team began to overrun the Deakin boys despite the best effort of our team. Debutant Adrian Diez Garcia was defending well for Deakin. Goalkeeper Jack Winter was making some great saves and starting the fast breaks for the team with his accurate distribution. Unfortunately, the boys ran out of legs and ended up going down to Melbourne.

 Women’s Team match

In the second match up between the two clubs, our Women’s Team followed on from the Men’s Team with a really strong start. After conceding the first five goals, the Women’s Team settled and began pegging back the margin. With ten minutes remaining in the first half, they had closed the margin to just one goal after some great saves by Sheridan Nicol and some accurate shooting from our backs. At half time, the girls trailed by three goals, 6-9. Unfortunately, the girls could not maintain their pressure and shooting accuracy. The Melbourne team took full advantage, scoring 21 goals to five in the second half. While it was a disappointing result for the girls, there were some great signs for the team and more time training together will see their results improve.

We are back training Wednesday night from 7:00pm-9:00pm. Our training sessions are now held at Wattle Park Primary School and all are welcome. We hope to see you there!
