The Men’s Team got back among the winners list on Sunday with a hard fought 17-15 victory over Southside Handball Club at Whitten Oval Sports Stadium. The lads started slowly and couldn’t find their rhythm. Their ball movement was slow and disjointed, highlighted unfamiliar combinations in our lineup and new players. This was in part due to the two new players in our line up and also the long awaited return of Matt Borland. The guys went into the break trailing 8-10.
The lads got going in the second half as they became more familiar with each other’s play. Borland began finding the net and the boys stepped up their defensive pressure. The boys wrestled the lead from Southside midway through the second half and held on to secure an important victory. The win ensures the Men’s Team sit second at the halfway mark of the season. They are one game clear of Melbourne Handball Club and two games clear of Southside.
In the Women’s Team, the girls were hit with a number of players unavailable for the match thanks to Handball Vic’s change to the fixture mid-season. With only five players on court as the match commenced, the ladies had their backs to the wall from the beginning. They fought on and with the arrival of two more players, began to work their way back into the match. The girls were down by 7 goals during the first half and trailed by this margin at the break. They were able to close the gap to 4 goals during the second half. However, without any subs the girls ran out of legs and ended up going down 10-19.
Just a reminder that training is at Wattle Park Primary School from 7:00pm-9:00pm on Wednesday nights. Please send all enquiries through our Contact Form on our website.
