Agonising loss for under strength Women’s Team

Women’s match

It was an agonising loss for our Women’s Team following the mid-season break. It seems a number of our girls took advantage of the mid-season break as we only had 5 available players for Sunday’s match. Instead of throwing in the towel, the girls decided they would play – and they certainly turned up to play!!!

It was a cagey opening with the girls taking a bit of time to adjust to the smaller numbers while having to defend against a full team from Southside. The first half was goal for goal for the most part. The girls still managed to find holes in the Southside defence while also managing to work together in a well organised team defence. At half time, the girls trailed 8-11.

The second half saw the girls continue to take it up to a Southside team with a numerical advantage. Goalkeeper Sheridan Nicol was making some great saves allowing Lisa Blenheim to throw some great passes to allow Jess Hollett 1-on-1 chances on the fast break. As the game entered its final stages, the girls drew level with a penalty with only 30 seconds on the clock. From there, a Southside attack saw them retake the lead before the girls rushed forward for one last attack. With the clock ticking down, a 12 metre shot from Jess Hollett beat the goalkeeper, however, only managed to cross the line a second after time expired.

It was a heartbreaking loss for the Women’s Team, but with the fight they showed and hopefully a full team in the coming weeks the girls have the chance to turn their season around. Some really great signs from our Women’s Team.

Men’s Match

The Men’s Team showed that they had been on a mid-season break with the opening stages of the match proving very sloppy. Both teams were struggling to get back into the swing of things and a slow first half saw our boys take a 15-7 lead into half time.

The boys started slowly again in the second half, allowing Southside to close the margin to just three goals. This wake-up call stung the boys into action and they then piled on 18 goals to 6 to run out comfortable winners, 36-21. The win consolidates second place on the ladder for the Men’s Team.
